Girls "Meet of Champions" results changed!!

Harmony Girls improved to 15th place at State due to changes in the results. Christina Ausley (3rd scorer) was changed from 183rd place to 160th place and her time was 15:02.44. Hannah Mosier (4th scorer) place was changed from 190th place to 167th place and her time was 15:06.52. Brooke Hammons (5th scorer) was changed from 153rd place to 181st and her time was 15:17.86. Grace Dieterle (6th scorer) place was changed from 198th to 199 and her time was 15:38.32. We cut 18 total points off our total so we improved 2 places from 17th place to 15th place. We were informed of these changes this morning!

The changed results are reflected below in the Girls placing/times.

The Harmony coaches are contesting the results for the Elementary girls "Meet of Champions" race. After reviewing the order of finish the results placed our runner Brooke Hammons 30 places ahead of Christina Ausley and 37 places ahead of Hannah Mosier. We know that both Christina and Hannah placed ahead of Brooke. We verified that it was not a Bibb number issue but were unable to convince the KTCCCA officials that there was an error with the chutes. We know that Christina and Hannah were in a different chute than Brooke and feel strongly that there was a mix-up with the chutes. Our only hope to have the results changed is if another coach contests the order of finish or they view a tape of the finish. I e-mailed Frank Miklavcic with KTCCCA yesterday asking for them to continue looking into the order of finish. Stay tuned.

Below is the article we submitted to the Oldham Era regarding the "Meet of Champions"

Harmony Runners/Parents

This is the headline and article that we are submitting to the Oldham Era this week.

Terkula sets course record for Boys Elementary 2K run at the North Oldham Rumble Through the Jungle Cross Country Meet

Harmony Elementary Boys finished third behind Goshen and Hite Elementary as David Terkula set a new course record time of 7:40.88 just ahead of a determined Trenton Fryman who ran a time of 7:43.03 for Goshen. This was Terkula's second straight win for Harmony as he captured the individual title at Shelby Invitational last weekend. Harmony's team got a spark by placing six runners in the top thirty-six and brought home ten of the fifty medals awarded in a field of one hundred and eighty one runners. Those runners were Connor Sullivan, Daniel Pennington, Jon Hines, Brandon Naber, Dylan Yates, Mark Scherer, Carter Falk, Quinten Cooper, and Mason Beard.

Harmony Elementary Girls had another strong showing as they took fourth place behind Goshen, Centerfield, and Kenwood Station. Harmony was led by tenth place finisher Erin Edmondson with a time of 8:59.12. The Harmony Girls like the boys brought home ten of the fifty medals awarded in a field of one hundred and sixty nine runners. Others placing in the top fifty were Christina Ausley, Brooke Hammons, Hannah Mosier, Jaclyn Ose, Grace Dieterle, Catherine Kaufman, Heather Wiley, Kaitlyn Hurley, and Kylie Dombrosky.

End of Article.

Many other Harmony runners did extremely well at the meet. Celine McClain showed a lot of heart in her 10:36.31 time. Trent Stigler just missed the top 50 and ran a solid 9:25.33 time. If Harmony runners continue their strong work ethic we will continue to improve as a team. We realize not everyone had their best day but as a team we really showed great improvement since the start of practice in early August!!

Harmony Elementary Cross Country Team Competes well at the Shelby Invitational

Harmony Elementary boys and girls competed well at the Shelby Invitational 1 Mile Cross Country Run over the Labor Day weekend. David Terkula started the season where he left off last season by winning the boys meet with a time of 6:23.49 and leading his team to a fifth place finish. Jonathon Hines, Dylan Yates, Alex McClarty, and Mason Beard rounded out the scoring for the Huskies. Probably the most amazing accomplishment was that the boys had two second graders and one third grader as scorers in a race that included sixth graders. An injured Mark Scherer showed the heart of a champion and Carter Falk, a new comer, gives this young team a bright future.

The Harmony girls were led by an outstanding performance in Erin Edmondson who finished the 1 mile run with a time of 7:17.80 and leading her team to a fourth place finish. Other scorers for the girls were Christina Ausley, Brooke Hammons, Hannah Mosier, and Kaitlyn Hurley. The girls like the boys are young with two third graders and one fourth grader scoring for the team. Other strong performances were turned in by Jaclyn Ose, Catherine Kaufman, Heather Wiley, and Grace Dieterle. The Harmony Cross Country team is definitely a team to watch.

Uniform Information

Hello Harmony,
This Monday we will take some time from practice to fit everyone for their uniforms. Tuesday at practice we will hand them out. We will post the meet directions and specifics for our meet in Shelby County on the blog too. Monday will be the absolute last day to take fees and get orders for apparel. Great practice tonight! Don't forget to check the blog before each practice and each meet. Lots of valuable info...

Practice Cancelled Tonight - Thursday, August 23

Due to another extremely high heat index, we need to cancel practice tonight - Thursday, August 23rd. We will hold another practice on Sunday at 6pm. Due to how difficult 3 practices in a row are, we'll take it fairly easy on Sunday. **Please bring your CC fee ($60) and money for all apparel Sunday. Practices will resume to normal schedule (we hope!!) Monday at 5pm.

Thank you for your patience - these runners are really improving!

Practice moved back Thursday August 23rd to 6:45

Hi team,
Our practice tonight has been moved back to 6:45 and will end at 8:00 due to high heat index. Please bring your water bottle. Tonight is the last night team fees will be collected, please bring your check for $60 per runner and get your apparel orders in. See you tonight. Thank you.

Tuesday, August 21, 2007

Great practices so far. We are going to have an amazing team this year! Two reminders for this week: 1) The fee of $60 is due, checks are made out to Harmony Elementary with CC in the memo. 2) We are taking orders for apparel this week. Each child runner gets a cross country t-shirt, but hooded sweatshirts, sweat pants, and long sleeved t-shirts are optional. Parents can order all apparel too! We hope to have our "cross country wear" by our second meet.

Make up Practice Sunday

There will be practice this Sunday (August 19th) at 5:00 due to having had cancelled practices the last several weeks. Our first meet is coming up on Sept. 1st and we wanted to give the runners the opportunity to log more mileage and training time - it's not a mandatory practice due to late notice and it not being a regularly scheduled practice. Practices will resume to our regular schedule on Monday at 5:00.

Tuesday, August 14, 2007

Practices Back to Normal Schedule

Practices will return to Monday, Tuesday, Thursday at 5:00 starting tonight (Tuesday, August 14). See you then!

Monday, August 6, 2007

Practice Changes

Due to extremely hot weather conditions, we will be practicing on Tuesday, August 7th at 7:00PM. Please remember to drink water throughout the day (drinking a bottle of water 30 minutes before practice is not adequate) and also please remember to write your name on your water bottle.

Practice on Thursday, August 9th will be cancelled due to a mandatory coaches meeting. We ask that you run 1/2 mile to a mile on your own on Thursday. It would be best if you were able to do this prior to 10:00am (before it gets too hot).

Practice on Monday will be MOVED -THIS WEEK ONLY- to Sunday at 7:00PM to better accommodate parents (and teachers!) going to Open House on Monday.

We will see you at practice tomorrow, at 7:00 - please let us know if you have any questions!

Practice Starts Today!

Practices will begin this evening (Monday, August 6th) at 5:00 at Creasy Mahan. Please park at the playground. All runners must bring a current sports physical in order to participate. We will be there a few minutes early to start the paperwork.

Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate! Please remember that it is crucial to drink a lot of water when the heat index is this high. You can not wait to start drinking once you are thirsty - it is then too late. We also will be monitoring the heat index and will adjust our practice accordingly.

Welcome to the 2007 Season!

Welcome to the 2007 Harmony Elementary Cross Country program. We are thrilled to begin another exciting season and continue to promote a healthy and fun lifestyle through running.

Philosophy:

We believe an elementary program is a building block for future running success. Our overall goal is to build a strong foundation for life-long enjoyment of running. Of course running develops physical fitness but it also instills several other strong characteristics such as confidence, concentration, motivation, and personal satisfaction. All of which serve us well in our personal, family, and professional adult lives.

There is no bench in cross country, so all runners compete. There is also every skill level – from new runners to the well experienced.

Spirited teamwork and camaraderie, which make running so much fun, are the foundation of true friendships, some of which last forever.

Although we emphasize improvements through participation and encourage each child to never give up, running is not for everyone. Many of the young kids have not tried distance running before and it may not be for them, therefore we have a 2-week “trial period”. During this period it is important to discuss with your child if they are having fun and enjoying running. If they are not having fun please, do not force your child, as they may become interested in running at a later age. Please encourage your child to complete both weeks before they make a decision and then honor that decision.

We plan on teaching more than running. We will instill the values of teamwork, dedication, and loyalty. Distance running can be a grueling sport, and although many of the kids are involved in other sports, they may find cross-country to be very challenging. We will expect them to cheer on their teammates, as well as other teams, and support them in whatever level of success they achieve. We will be singling out runners who show the type of behavior that exemplifies good teamwork.

Please take time to talk with your child about how they respond to having a good or bad day. How we react to a losing situation says more about our character than how we react on a good day.

Practice

During the month of August, practices will be on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursdays from 5:00 pm to 6:15 pm at Creasy Mahan Nature Preserve with the first practice on August 6th. Once the meets begin we will discontinue practices on Mondays. Meets are typically on Saturdays with a select few on Thursday. Please be sure to be on time for practices, as we have limited time together to warm up properly for our training runs. We will be running in ability groups and will continually move kids around as they develop. We will stress to the runners that they need to measure their success on individual improvement and depending on each runner’s capability. We will offer training techniques to help them set their goals.

The target weekly mileage for this age group is 6-9 miles per week and increasing to 12 miles per week later in the season. The mileage includes races.

*****Parking****Please park in the east gravel parking lot near the playground. If you have small children they can enjoy the playground during practice.

Preparation

We will spend a little time talking to the kids about nutrition and healthy eating habits, particularly prior to meets. The diet should include lots of fresh fruits and veggies, carbohydrates, and lean protein and should limit junk food and sodas. It is very important that runners drink plenty of water all the time, not just on race and practice days. Start off the school year by sending a water bottle everyday, they can refill if necessary.

***For practice each runner should have their own water bottle with their name on it. Stretching on an everyday basis is also a good habit, but please do not overstretch pulled or injured muscles.

Parent Runners and Helpers

We had a great turn out of helpers in this area last year and would love to have you again.

For those of you interested in running with your child or just being outdoors with them, this is a great opportunity to gain time with your child and stay in shape. We are in need of both parent runners and course monitors to read times.

Summer Workouts

We don’t believe in a set summer training program for this age group, although we do recommend maintaining some sort of physical activity through the summer that would be the equivalent to 4-6 miles per week. This may include any sport that increases your heart rate for 20-40 minutes at least 3 times per week. Get your children outside to play!

Equipment

The most important equipment is your child’s running shoes. Something with good support and cushion. Improper shoes, such as basketball shoes or cross training shoes, can affect running form and cause injury.

Second is clothing. Nothing fancy is required but non-cotton, wicking fabrics are the best and are available in most stores. The lighter the clothes the better, but later in the season warmth becomes very important.

Dress code requires no rolled down pants or shorts and no exposed bellies. Also, during meets, officials will not allow jewelry of any kind.

Third is an individual water bottle labeled with your child’s name.

Fees

A fee of $60 will be collected from each runner by the end of the second week of practice. (Thursday August 16th). This fee covers all of our meet entries, team shirts, awards, and equipment/supplies.

Forms

Runners cannot participate until they have an updated “Sports Physical” and “Permission slip” on file with Margaret Hare, the team manager.
